CPR or cardiopulmonary resuscitation is a life-saving technique used in emergencies to help restore breathing and circulation. AHA authorized CPR and AED training centers give you the skills you need to recognize and respond to a person during an emergency that could save their life.

Anyone can, and should, learn basic CPR – someday these skills could save a life. Whether you are a medical professional, childcare provider, teacher, business member, community volunteer or parent, knowing how to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation can give someone who’s heart has stopped or who isn’t breathing the best chance of survival.
If someone is not responsive and isn’t breathing, or isn’t breathing normally, a bystander should begin CPR and call for help, activating the emergency response system. Identifying a person, whether it be from a cardiac arrest, a traumatic injury, or drowning, who requires life-saving interventions, and rapidly deploying the emergency medical system, can save their life.
CPR is a combination of mouth-to-mouth rescue breathing and chest compressions, to restore blood flow to the heart, brain and other vital organs until advanced medical life support can be given.
An AED, or automated external defibrillator, is a key component to effective CPR. The AED is a portable device that analyzes the heart’s rhythm and determines if an electrical shock is needed to restore an effective rhythm. If it is needed, the AED can deliver, either automatically or with a push of a button, an electrical shock to the heart which can re-start the heart, or shock the heart back into an organized rhythm.
There is clear evidence of improved survival from cardiac arrest when a bystander performs CPR and rapidly uses an AED.

Every 2 years your CPR certification expires, which means that in order to stay certified, you need to take a CPR renewal course. Many jobs require their employees to have a valid CPR certification. If your certification lapses, you may risk loosing your job or being penalized. But more importantly, it’s important to be prepared. Knowing CPR and how to rescue someone in a life threatening situation is reason enough to keep your certification active.
CPR, for most of us, is not something that we use in our everyday life. If we are not constantly using those skills, we will forget. Taking a recertification course every 2 years refreshes that knowledge and the techniques needed to save a life.
The guidelines for CPR and AED use are constantly changing - yet another reason to keep your certification up to date.
